I had enjoyed last year's show, so was hoping for some interesting work here. This piece in particular was very strong. The artist pasted a series of posters to the wall, like an advertising hoarding, and then ripped them off to make the image.
New Years Resolution #1 is to buy some art. So, I'm in an empty warehouse in Southwark, viewing work by some Central Saint Martin's graduates. It's quite the happening: rickety staircases, a maze of derelict rooms, and lots of nice Home Counties girls trying to look like Edie Sedgwick. It's terribly, terribly now; but there's too many video installations for my taste. Lazy bloody students. I want to see some effort for my taxes. When I visit the studio I want to see them up to the elbows in oils, not parked in front of a DVD. I take a few names, but sadly missed one of the more outré exhibits. Basically, the artist stands in the middle of the room, whips out his cock, and pours a bucket of mud over his head - untitled (it's the 'untitled' which marks it as true genius). The bucket of mud is here, but he's not. The next performance is not for 25 minutes. I made my excuses and left. Now if a chap presents himself, front and centre, trousers down; I'm happy to take in his oeuvre. But, hanging around, waiting for someone to expose themselves; it just didn't seem right.....
